Providing feedback using B-Successful

Alerts and Kudos can be raised at anytime during the semester and is ideal for faculty who have individual concerns (or praise) about a student.  When you have a concern about a student, raise an alert to communicate it to both the student and appropriate staff members.

What happens when you raise an alert or kudo?

Alerts are categorized into different levels of severity; recognition, medium and high. The severity of the alert determines the response.

  • Recognition (Email ONLY) - These are the kudos. The student will receive an email, including any faculty comments.
  • Medium and High (Supportive Outreach) - The student will receive an email, including faculty comments. Academic Advising  or other student support offices will reach out to the student.  A chart is provided below for easy reference.
Alert Level Alert Type When to Use This Message Intent Student's Next Steps
🟢 Recognition Keep up the Good Work Student is performing at a high level consistently Affirm effort and strengthen connection Continue current strategies; may ask instructor for enrichment opportunities
🟢 Recognition Overall Improvement in Performance Student has shown recent measurable growth Celebrate progress and build confidence Maintain strategies that led to improvement; seek instructor feedback on strengths

Advising Referral Use when a student appears to need additional support that goes beyond classroom or academic issues Notify advising staff discreetly so they can review the case and reach out No direct message to the student — this alert informs advising only

🔴 High Concern In Danger of Failing – Not Attending Student has stopped attending class Express care and prompt immediate action Contact instructor to discuss standing; meet with academic advisor at ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ about options
🔴 High Concern Overall Decline in Performance Student’s performance has dropped across the term Show care, reduce shame, and spark re-engagement Meet with instructor to clarify concerns; work with advisor or Success Coach to build a plan
🔴 High Concern In Danger of Failing – Poor Performance Student is failing despite attendance Reassure, reset expectations, and connect supports Confirm standing with instructor; meet with advisor and use tutoring, Success Coaching, or counseling

Please Note:

  • Students will receive a that includes your comments.
  • In some cases, students are encouraged to reach out to you for additional information about these comments.
  • Academic advisors and other key support staff can see your comments for their assigned students.
  • Faculty will receive an email when staff members have acted upon a high level alert.
  • When you raise an alert, the student will receive an immediate email notification for each alert or kudo. These emails include any comments you entered. In all of the templates, instructors have an opportunity to outline details of the specific concern or praise in the comments section.

Raising an alert lets the student know directly about concerns, or praise for progress. Students are very responsive to kudos that let them know their efforts are recognized and appreciated. The earlier an alert is raised, the better chance that potential success barriers are addressed.
