The Broome County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a program under the Disaster Preparedness Division in the Office of Emergency Services. The program works to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
Broome County CERT members also support local emergency response agencies as an auxiliary force of trained personnel. Broome County CERT has training and experience in the following areas:
Providing support to emergency services professionals, both short and long term
Security, traffic and crowd control
Wildland Search & Rescue
Community Outreach, Emergency Preparedness and Education
Assisting at PODS in a pandemic or medical emergency
Staffing evacuation centers and assist the displaced
Organize/manage untrained spontaneous volunteers
Team meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month, 7 PM at the Michael F. Aswad Emergency Services Special Operations and Training Facility.
