Glenwood Elementary is looking for volunteers to coach Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams. OM teams meet once a week for about 1-1.5 hours (beginning at 3:20/3:30pm and ending around 4:30-5:00pm, depending on what the coach thinks is manageable: most teams will end at 4:30pm). Meetings can be any day of the week. Responsibilities include:
+ Being present for all OM team meetings
+ Helping the team to decide on a problem and then reading through the problem set for the team
+ Helping to coordinate getting supplies for the team
+ Working with team members to help promote creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork
+ Keeping the team on track with completing tasks
+ Helping to fill out paperwork for the team
The program runs from late November through March 9th, 2024, which is the date of competition. Coaches would also need to be available on that day to help support their team. If the team advances on to the next level (States), then the coach would need to continue to be available beyond March 9th. Usually, state competition is the following month.
We ask that interested volunteers start before January, so that they could get 1-2 meetings in before January. The volunteer assigned to a team would need to remain the same throughout the OM program, meaning whoever starts with the team in December would also need to stay through to March, and would also need to be available during that break time from the end of the fall semester to the beginning of the spring semester so that our students can continue to meet.
Interested volunteers should contact Kyra Hickey at khickey@binghamton.edu.
