The Sierra Club Susquehanna Group is looking for folks interested in environmental issues to join the Executive Committee (the Board). We are the local level group of the National Sierra Club whose mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth. Executive Committee members discuss environmental areas within our region and vote on actions to address them.
The time commitment is pretty low. We have two meetings a month on Tuesdays at 7pm. The first is our Executive Committee meeting held via Zoom where we discuss recent/upcoming activities and relevant environmental news. The second is our General Membership meeting held at the Vestal Public Library (there is a virtual option as well) where we give brief updates to the broader membership and host a guest speaker. We've had some pretty interesting topics covered... ins and outs of electric vehicles, zero waste, home efficiency upgrades and assistance, waste management in Broome County, urban sprawl, pollinators, etc. etc... Executive Committee members are expected to attend the monthly Executive Committee meeting as well as most of the General Membership meetings. We also have a handful of outings/events throughout the year that's a great time to meet other members.
It's really awesome to have dedicated time to sit down with folks who care about these issues. Many of them have been around the block when it comes to fighting against climate change and for the environment. We're trying to diversify our leadership and get some fresh faces involved to keep that good conversation going.
You don't need to be a current Sierra Club member to join the Executive Committee. To become a candidate for the Susquehanna Group's Executive Committee, send a candidate statement of 150 words or less by November 12, 2024 to SierraClubSusquehannaGroup@gmail.com or mail to Susquehanna Group, PO Box 572, Endicott NY 13760. Candidate statements should explain your background and interest in issues of sustainability/the environment and why you want to join the Committee.
