Fresh Cycles is in need of volunteers to assist Fresh Cycles instructors in supervising and directing two weekly programs. Volunteers may choose to attend either or both programs.
Fresh Cycle's Open Shop is held every Monday from 5pm-7pm. Open Shop is an public workshop where community members may drop-in and get bicycle repair guidance from instructors and peers. Youth participants are also encouraged to complete shop tasks and other repairs in exchange for "shop hours" which can be redeemed for bicycles or parts. Volunteer duties include shadowing instructors and learning bicycle skills, offering repair guidance, cleaning and organizing the workshop, and interacting with community members and youth to create a supportive and encouraging environment. Volunteers will learn basic bicycle repairs skills and other mechanical knowledge. Volunteers also benefit from the opportunity to interact with, learn from, and support the empowerment of a motivated and diverse group of Northside residents and youth.
Fresh Cycle's Group Ride is held Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30pm during the late spring and through the summer. Group Ride teaches youth and adults safe riding skills including rules of the road, safety equipment, and techniques for riding with the goal of increasing bicycle ridership and confidence. Group Rides take youth from the Liberty St neighborhood all over the city, giving participants the chance to explore places and things that would previously be inaccessible. Examples including trips to art galleries, parks, and other sites of interest. Volunteer duties include keeping riders attentive and focused on safe riding, captaining groups of 1-3 youth within the larger group, and carrying small amounts of water and snacks for participants. Volunteers will learn safe bicycle riding techniques and will gain a greater appreciation of the City of Binghamton region. Volunteers will also benefit from the opportunity to support youth in developing healthy lifestyles and in support youth empowerment through confidence in mobility, safety, and physical activity.
