TRIP Excellence Awards

These honorary awards, which come with a small stipend, are the Marilyn Gaddis Rose Excellence Award in Translation and the Ben Van Wyke Excellence Award in Translation Studies Research, both established in 2018.


Ben Van Wyke Excellence Award in Translation Studies Research

The Ben Van Wyke Excellence Award in Translation Studies Research seeks to stimulate research in the area by graduate students working in TRIP as well as other programs and departments that have opened space to the discipline of Translation Studies at 黑料视频. The award will be made annually, as funds are available, to honor the memory of Ben Van Wyke (1976-2017), a renowned scholar and one of the TRIP PhD鈥檚 first and most distinguished alumni. 

Those interested in applying should be ABD and working on dissertations in the area. Applicants are required to send Erin Riddle (eriddle@binghamton.edu) a three-page, double-spaced summary of their project, accompanied by at least two letters of support from faculty (faculty to submit directly to TRIP), and copies of the following: abridged curriculum vitae, publications in the area (submit as links to the full manuscript), and any other evidence of their commitment to translation studies research. Priority will be given to TRIP graduate students.

The deadline for submission is March 31, 2025. The recipient of the award will be chosen by a committee constituted by the TRIP Director and announced by May.

Availability of this award is dependent upon donor funding.


The Marilyn Gaddis Rose Excellence Award in Translation

The Marilyn Gaddis Rose Excellence Award in Translation seeks to stimulate the scholarly practice of translation of literary and academic texts by graduate students working in TRIP as well as other programs and departments that have opened space to translation as an academically-based practice at 黑料视频. The award will be made annually to honor the memory of Distinguished Service Professor Marilyn Gaddis Rose (1930-2015), an internationally recognized pioneer in the study of translation and founder of TRIP. 

Those interested in applying are required to send Erin Riddle (eriddle@binghamton.edu) their most distinguished translation (or translations) of literary fiction, poetry, or academic texts (philosophy, anthropology, sociology, etc.), of 3,000-7,000 words,* and the source text, accompanied by at least two letters of support from faculty, as well as copies of the following: abridged curriculum vitae, samples of published translations (submit as links to the full manuscript), and any other evidence of their commitment to the practice of scholarly translation. Priority will be given to TRIP graduate students.

*In the case of poetry, please determine on your own what you believe would be a comparable amount of poetry translation to 3,000-7,000 words, based on the effort required, and write a brief justification to explain how you determined this equivalency. In other words, submit a comparable total amount of text to 3,000-7,000 words. If your poetry submission does not reach this quantity, based on your determination of the effort required, be sure to include additional translated text as well to meet the length requirement.
