Background
Alex Orkwis joined Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences in August 2023 as a clinical assistant professor in the Occupational Therapy division. He comes to Binghamton from Loveland, Ohio, where he practiced occupational therapy. His passion for scholarly activities stemmed from a young age while spending time with his father, a professor of aerospace engineering and an administrator for the University of Cincinnati.
With a background spanning over a decade supporting people within the special needs community, his impactful work has encompassed:
- Publication of interdisciplinary research utilizing iWorx software to record biomechanical data during functional activities
- Innovation encompassing design, modeling and 3D-printing a variety of assistive devices in conjunction with engineers or independently to address various distinct client needs
- Leadership as director of Camp Odakota, uniquely crafted by occupational therapists to offer children with sensory processing disorders a 鈥渢ypical鈥 summer camp experience
- Collaborative treatment, supervisory roles, delivery of teletherapy during COVID-19 and establishment of affordable sensory rooms in K-12 public schools and outpatient settings
- Membership in Ohio鈥檚 OTPTAT Board Legislation Committee, contributing to safety regulations within the practice of occupational therapy
