It’s the appointment you’ve been waiting for all week! You can’t wait to get out of work and head to the salon; a happy, magical place where the friendly front desk offers you a refreshing drink and hangs your coat, your stylist is always smiling, but also armed with an arsenal of beautifying products and a nonjudgmental ear to listen to you vent about all of the last month’s frustrations. You’re not even sure how they do it. Somehow, you arrive somewhat a wreck, emotionally and physically drained, thirsty and hungry for change, but also for a little R&R, and maybe even a bit of gossip. How does your stylist do this day in and day out? With arms that would make Michelle Obama jealous, your stylist perfects your blow out with ease, never skipping a beat in the conversation or losing her cool…which is quite impressive considering all the hot tools and dryers in the midst. Then, voila. You’re gorgeous. You hug a goodbye, flipping your hair ceremoniously as you exit the salon a new-and-improved human being.
That’s how it usually goes anyway. Unfortunately, the ending is sometimes a little less glamourous. Have you ever had a haircut or hair color that you didn’t quite love after all? If so, it’s okay. It happens! Even the most talented stylists have been there. The most important thing to do if you don’t absolutely love your ‘after’ is to tell your stylist immediately! Even if it’s exactly what you asked for and you’re simply embarrassed to admit that you just changed your mind, trust me–it’s a lot easier to let the stylist who just completed the change try to fix it to your liking. There are hundreds upon hundreds of color combinations, not to mention the multitude of reactions your unique head of hair might have to said color, to make up even the slightest change. Letting the stylist who knows exactly what was used in your hair will benefit you in achieving the look you want.
Confession time: I’ve personally been there! My experienced, talented stylist gave me exactly what I’d asked for. EXACTLY. I’d just realized afterward that I didn’t love it on me. I went home after the appointment and thought maybe if I changed my lipstick or styled it differently, I’d like the color more. Sad to say, I still didn’t love it. It didn’t look bad. In fact, other people liked it on me. I just didn’t think it was me, and mine was the opinion that mattered in this case. I called my stylist and told her my thoughts. I was so surprised at her reaction. She immediately put me at ease and let me know that she wanted me to be happy. Really, that’s all any stylist ever wants. Their entire job is to make you feel happy…and gorgeous. If you ever don’t feel either after an appointment, do not feel too embarrassed to let us know!
