Women’s basketball team holds off Army

Senior forward Viive Rebane scored a game-high 17 points and senior guard Orla O鈥橰eilly added 14 points, leading Binghamton (5-3) to a 49-47 victory over Army (6-4) in a non-conference women鈥檚 basketball game Dec. 5 in West Point. The victory marked the Bearcats鈥 third straight road triumph.
Down 26-24 at the break, the Bearcats held the Black Knights to 21 second-half points. Binghamton took the lead for good during a 10-2 run in a span of 5:07 put Binghamton up 41-33 with 9:13 left in regulation.
鈥淚 was happy with how our players did during the second half,鈥 head coach Nicole Scholl said. 鈥淎rmy is a good team and we didn鈥檛 let the game get away from us after the first half.鈥
Rebane鈥檚 three-pointer with 4:35 left in regulation put the Bearcats up 48-39 but the Black Knights reeled off the next eight points to close to within 48-47 at the two-minute mark. Molly Yardley capped the run with a three pointer.
Neither team scored on the next five possessions as Binghamton still clung to a one-point lead with 30 seconds to go. O鈥橰eilly made the front end of a one-and-one with 19.5 remaining. The Black Knights, meanwhile, were unable to tie the game on their final two possessions.
Senior guard Andrea Holmes added 10 points and a season-high eight assists. She now moves into sole possession of eight place all time in program history with 1,198 career points. Heading into the game, she was tied with Laine Kurpniece (2004-08) with 1,188 points.
