Volleyball team struggles at Georgetown Classic

The Binghamton volleyball program finished the Georgetown Classic 0-3 after dropping a pair of matches to Furman and East Carolina on Sept. 18. Binghamton is now 4-9 on the year. The Bearcats lost the opening match of the tournament, 3-0 (23-25,18-25,24-26 ), to Georgetown.
“It was a tough day,” head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. “We still have a lot of stuff to work on. Xiomara (Ortiz) and Michelle (McDonough) played well for us, but we needed a stronger effort overall.”
Binghamton began their day against Furman, the defending Southern Conference regular season champion. The Bearcats dropped the match 13-25, 23-25 and 13-25.
Senior hitter Anna Lejina had 11 kills for BU, while freshman libero Ortiz chalked up 16 digs. The reigning America East Setter of the Week, Julie Chambers, passed out 26 assists for Binghamton.
In the second match of the day the Bearcats played a tough, five-set match against East Carolina. The Pirates held off Binghamton for a 17-25, 24-26, 25-16, 28-16, 11-15 victory. McDonough led the way for the Bearcats with 20 kills and 20 digs. Lejina followed up her solid performance in the Furman match with 15 kills and 15 digs. Chambers handed out 50 assists while Ortiz tallied 24 digs.
Ortiz was named to the all-tournament team.
