Binghamton (1-0) fought through snowy and windy conditions to power past Lafayette (1-1), 10-8, at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Feb. 24. Seven different Binghamton players entered the scoring column, led by sophomore midfielder Michael Antinozzi, who recorded three goals for the Bearcats.

Antinozzi got things going for the Bearcats by spinning past a Lafayette defender and firing a right-handed shot that trickled past Lafayette goalie Jake Hyatt. Just 10 seconds later, senior defenseman Ben Waldron scored directly after the faceoff with a low shot into the back of the net. After a goal from junior Tyler Perrelle, Binghamton pushed its lead to 4-0, thanks to Antinozzi鈥檚 second score of the game.

Both teams added a goal before half, as Binghamton saw itself up 5-1 going into intermission.

The Leopards opened up the second half with a goal from senior attackman Will Heffernan that cut the Binghamton lead down to 5-2, but Binghamton answered just a minute and 42 seconds later as Antinozzi picked up his first career hat trick in a Bearcats uniform. Later, freshman attackman Paul O鈥橠onnell found the back of the net at the 5:12 mark in the third period, boosting the Bearcats lead to 7-2.

Binghamton allowed a pair of goals to close out the third period, but still held an 8-4 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

Quickly in the fourth, Binghamton added to its lead with junior midfielder Tyler Perrelle鈥檚 second score of the game. Antinozzi dished out of a double team to senior John Clark, who found an open Perrelle, who fired a liner over the right shoulder of the Lafayette keeper from 15 yards out. The Bearcats offense kept the pressure up, scoring six seconds later as Clark beat the keeper on the lower right side of the net.

鈥淲e got off to a hot start and really were playing an effective and exciting style of lacrosse,鈥� head coach Scott Nelson said. 鈥淎s the weather started to worsen you saw the play get a little sloppier, but both teams fought hard and it鈥檚 definitely nice to get a win against a good Lafayette team.鈥�

Senior goalie Jordan Marra stopped 14 shots, just one shy of his career-high set last season vs. Hartford. Senior Ben Waldron forced eight turnovers and picked up 10 ground balls in the victory. Sophomore defenseman Greg Cove also had a strong start, recording four ground balls and a caused turnover.

鈥淒efensively we performed the way we are certainly capable of,鈥� Nelson said. 鈥淥ur midfield play was key. We were able to get solid production out of both Antinozzi and Perrelle.鈥�
