Men’s soccer rallies to defeat Niagara
September 30, 2010
Redshirt freshman midfielder Chris Hobbs had a goal and an assist, leading Binghamton to a 4-2 victory at Niagara in men’s soccer action on Sept. 29. With the victory, the Bearcats have now gone 2-0-2 in their last four matches.
Binghamton (2-4-2) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, marking the first time during its nine-year NCAA Division I era that it has won a game after being down by more than one goal. In addition, the four goals represent the Bearcats’ highest single-game total since beating UMBC, 4-0, on Oct. 31, 2009.
Niagara scored twice in a span of 3:23 to take a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute. Hobbs started Binghamton’s comeback less than two minutes later when he assisted on sophomore forward Jake Keegan’s first goal of the season. In the 31st minute, Hobbs took matters into his own hands as he netted an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2.
With just under two minutes left in the first half, sophomore forward Adam Whitehead put the Bearcats ahead with an 18-yard shot to the upper-left corner of the net. Redshirt freshman back Tommy Klim was credited with the assist.
In the 62nd minute, freshman midfielder Tommy Moon put the Bearcats ahead to stay with a shot that slid just inside the post. Fellow freshman Luke Halberg was credited with the assist.
“Outside of that three-minute span in the first half, I thought our guys played quite well tonight,” head coach Paul Marco said. “We got four fantastic goals. It was hard to tell which goals were better.”
Binghamton outshot Niagara 22-12 for the game. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chris Hayen made four saves in the winning effort.
