The Binghamton volleyball team defeated visiting UMBC in three sets in front of a raucous home crowd at West Gym on Sept. 21. The Bearcats (4-12, 1-0 AE) won 25-22, 25-18 and 25-12 to overpower the Retrievers (7-11, 0-1 AE) and snap a five-match losing streak vs. UMBC. In one of the Athletics Department鈥檚 鈥淐ode Green鈥� games, the Bearcats did not disappoint their fans, playing increasingly better as the night went on.

鈥淚 thought we were very scrappy tonight,鈥� head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. 鈥淲e had some really good ups in the back row. Xiomara (Ortiz) did a nice job of organizing the defense and our line diggers did a great job of getting to balls. We were flying all over the place and there was great energy on the court. It was a great turnout tonight and I think the players really fed off the crowd.鈥�

Binghamton had its best hitting performance of the season, finishing at a .402 clip, led by sophomore Kristin Hovie鈥檚 16 kills and .500 hitting percentage. Senior Alex Roland displayed her ability to finish, pasting 11 terminations on a .526 hitting clip. The Binghamton offense ran seamlessly thanks to sophomore setter Amanda Dettmann鈥檚 41 assists, also chipping in six digs and four kills.

Both teams battled early in the first set, as the opening frame was tied nine times until a Roland kill capped a 4-1 Binghamton run to give the Bearcats a 14-11 lead. UMBC fought to stay in the stanza, but a Hovie termination pushed Binghamton鈥檚 lead to four, 18-14, forcing a Retriever timeout. UMBC crawled within one down the stretch, but multiple unforced errors derailed their comeback attempt dropping the first set 25-22.

Binghamton raced out of the gate in the second frame, claiming an 8-1 lead thanks to a 7-0 serving run capped by a rare kill from libero Ortiz. The Bearcats maintained their lead throughout the set until a 6-1 UMBC run brought the Retrievers within two, 19-17. However, three Hovie kills aided a 6-1 Binghamton run to hold off UMBC and take a two-sets-to-none lead, 25-18. Binghamton finished off 19 kills and used a .485 hitting percentage to claim the two-set advantage.

In the third and final frame, the Bearcats played their best set of the night, connecting on 17 kills and committing just two attack errors, while holding UMBC to a negative hitting percentage. Binghamton broke the stanza wide open with a 5-0 run to claim a 20-9 lead. Several Bearcats were in on the action as Roland, Hovie, Dettmann and junior captain Grace Vickers all recorded kills during the scoring spurt. Terminations by Roland and senior hitter Iva Partaleva assisted Binghamton in completing the straight-set victory, 25-12.

Defensively, Ortiz scrambled on multiple occasions to pick up diving digs and keep the ball alive for her hitters, finishing with a match-high 12 digs. Binghamton racked up 51 kills compared to UMBC鈥檚 26 and stifled its conference foe to a .115 hitting percentage. The Bearcats totaled six blocks on the night led by Roland鈥檚 three.
