Steeley wins wrestling title at NYS Championship
November 19, 2012
Competing without its top three nationally-ranked individuals, Binghamton wrestling had a solid seventh place showing at the New York State Championship, hosted by Cornell at Newman Arena on Nov. 17.
The host Big Red won the title with 183.5 points, followed by Columbia, Hofstra, Buffalo and Army in the top five.
Senior Derek Steeley earned the team’s lone individual title, beating teammate Dan Riggi 8-2 in the championship bout. Steeley was unseeded but went 4-0 and upset the No. 2 seed Jordan Thome of Army.
Junior Riggi was equally impressive, earning a spot in the all-Binghamton final with three wins. The unseeded Riggi took down top-seeded Jamie Franco of Hofstra, 5-2, in the semifinals for his marquee win.
Other placewinners included sophomore heavyweight Tyler Deuel, who stormed back through the consolation draw to place third. Deuel shook off an opening-match defeat to rattle off five straight wins, including two pins and a major decision.
Junior 184-pound Cody Reed went 3-2 to place fourth, sophomore 174-pound John Paris went 3-2 to place seventh and redshirt freshman Tyler Pendergast won four matches to take seventh at 141.
