Five Binghamton wrestlers ranked nationally
November 2, 2010
Headed by reigning All-American Justin Lister, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ wrestling has five individuals who will begin the 2010-11 season in the national rankings.
In the four primary rankings outlets, Lister is anywhere from No. 2 to No. 4 heading into his junior season at 157 pounds. He placed fourth last season after a remarkable NCAA Championship showing as an unseeded entry. It is the highest that any BU wrestler has been ranked to start the season.
Also garnering preseason rankings are fellow defending CAA champions Anwar Goeres (141 lbs.) and Nate Schiedel (184), along with 2010 NCAA qualifiers sophomore Donnie Vinson (149) and junior Matt Kaylor (165). Vinson appears in all four rankings, with Goeres, Kaylor and Schiedel earning a spot in two outlets apiece.
In addition to the individual rankings, BU received mention in two team polls. Coach Pat Popolizio’s squad is tied for 21st in W.I.N. Magazine’s NCAA Tournament Power Index - an indicator of a team’s ability to score points and place at the NCAA Championship. The Bearcats also were “receiving votes” in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll.
The team will hold its “Wrestle-Off” event at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the West Gym. Binghamton then begins its season by hosting the day-long BU Open on Nov. 14 from the Events Center.
