Visiting Binghamton (26-13, 13-2 AE) scored all of its runs in the top of the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 win over Stony Brook (25-22, 7-8 AE) in an America East softball game on April 28 at University Field in Stony Brook. With the win, the Bearcats sweep the three-game weekend series and set up a first-place showdown with Albany (30-11, 13-1 AE) this weekend at the Bearcats Sports Complex for the America East regular-season title.

The Bearcats have now won six straight games and have recorded their highest win total in America East Conference games in a season.  They have swept all five conference series this year and have gone 8-1 on the road during that span.

For the first four innings on Sunday, both teams were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances. The Bearcats left six runners on base during that stretch while the Seawolves left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning.

Finally, the floodgates opened in the top of the fifth inning. Junior second baseman Jessica Bump scored the first run on a wild pitch. Two batters later, freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis followed with a RBI single and freshman designated hitter Griffin McIver wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single.

Stony Brook got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shayla Giosa scored on a sacrifice fly and Alexandria Pisciotta singled home the second run.

Junior pitcher Demi Laney tossed four shutout innings to improve to 13-5 on the season. Senior pitcher Kate Price finished off the final three innings to record her third save of the year. Allison Cukrov was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 9-13.

鈥淚 thought we stayed composed and in control even though some things didn鈥檛 go our way early in the game,鈥� head coach Michelle Burrell said. 鈥淒emi again got us out of some tough spots and pitched very well. Jess (Phillips) also made a great catch in the sixth inning.鈥�

Friis finished the game 2-for-4. For the series, she hit a team-best .444 (4-for-9).

Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh went 4-for-11 (.364) during the weekend while Chaffee was 3-for-9 (.333) and Bump was 3-for-10 (.300). On the mound, Binghamton held Stony Brook to a .241 batting average and recorded an ERA of just 0.64.
