Wrestling team falls to Buffalo

Binghamton wrestling fell to longtime SUNY rival Buffalo 24-12 in a dual match Jan. 2 at the West Gym.
The Bearcats held an early advantage over the visiting Bulls, winning four of the first five matches for a quick 12-4 lead. The opening match, which started at the 149-pound weight class, featured a tightly contested battle between sophomore 149-pound Donnie Vinson and nationally-ranked Desi Green (No. 13). Vinson earned the upset bid with a 3-2 decision, improving his dual match record to a perfect 10-0 while climbing to 13-2 overall.
Binghamton’s lineup featured a midseason weight class swap between two reigning NCAA qualifiers. Nationally-ranked 157-pound Justin Lister moved up to 165 pounds and junior 165-pound Matt Kaylor moved down to 157. Lister earned a 4-2 triumph in double-overtime as he improved to 7-2 in dual matches, while Kaylor was defeated in a major decision.
Senior 174-pound Ryan McGarity bested Brian Sheehan 6-1, moving to 6-4 in dual matches and 17-9 overall this season. Sophomore ninth-ranked 184-pound Nate Schiedel capped the third straight decision in favor of Binghamton as he defeated 19th-ranked James Hamel in a 3-0 decision.
The Bearcats’ strength in the middle of the lineup propelled them to the early 12-4 advantage. However, two decisions in favor of Buffalo at the 197-pound and heavyweight decision and a forfeit in the 125-pound weight class by Binghamton gave the Bulls a 16-12 lead. Buffalo ran the table from there, posting two consecutive major decisions for a final of 24-12.
“Overall, losing a dual meet is very disappointing,” head coach Pat Popolizio said. “But on the positive side, I like the fact that three of our guys beat three nationally ranked opponents. Donnie Vinson, Justin Lister and Nate Schiedel all had wins over nationally ranked guys. I thought Donnie Vinson wrestled spectacular, having never beaten that kid [Desi Green] before and getting a win this year is a very positive sign for him and he needs to grow off this and continue to do the things he’s doing. I was most impressed today by the way Donnie Vinson performed.”
