November 13, 2012
Binghamton crowned three individual champions at its own Open tournament Sunday at West Gym. The event drew more than 300 wrestlers from 17 teams across the Northeast.
Winning titles were sophomore 141-pound Joe Bonaldi, senior 149-pound Donnie Vinson and senior 197-pound Nate Schiedel.
鈥淓verybody brought a great effort and a great attitude today,鈥 head coach Matt Dernlan said. 鈥淵ou see the fight they brought to the table today with three champions. It was good to see.鈥
Schiedel went 4-0 and put an exclamation point on his title by beating reigning All-American and fifth-ranked Micah Burak of Penn, 5-2, in the title match. Schiedel, ranked 13th in the Intermat Preseason Poll, pinned his first opponent in 28 seconds, rolled to a 16-4 major decision in his second match and scored a 4-1 decision in the semifinals.
Vinson continued his assault on opponents with a 5-0 day that included two pins and a 17-3 major decision over Mac Maldarelli of Lock Haven in the final.
Bonaldi had a strong showing with five straight wins and his first collegiate title. He upset sixth-ranked and reigning All-American Mike Nevinger of Cornell, 4-3, in his first-round match. Bonaldi then posted decisions of 4-3, 3-1 and 3-2 before pulling out a 6-4 tiebreaker win over Joe Stanzione of Cornell in the final.
Sophomore heavyweight Tyler Deuel won three matches to claim fourth place. Deuel posted a 4-1 decision in his first match before pinning Marcos Aranda of Brown in 6:13. Deuel added a first-period pin in the wrestlebacks before losing in the third-place bout.
