Garn wins 800 at Penn State meet
February 9, 2015
Senior middle distance runner Jesse Garn won the 800, highlighting Binghamton’s performance at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge, which was hosted by Penn State on Feb. 7. The Bearcat men finished eighth out of 11 teams, while the women were 11th out of 12 competing schools.
Garn’s winning time of 1:48.57 is the 13th fastest at the NCAA Division I level so far this season. The top 16 times as of March 8 will advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships. That meet will be held March 13-14 at the University of Arkansas.
On Feb. 7, Garn won by over a full second over runner up Za’Von Watkins of Penn State (1:49.68). In the process, he broke his own 2012 school record of 1:48.85, which he set at the NCAA East Regional Outdoor Meet.
In addition to Garn, both senior Ethan Hausamann and junior Joe Miceli met the IC4A qualifying standard in their events. Hausamann was third in the 5,000 (14:34.58) while Miceli tied for seventh in the pole vault (15-11 ¼).
On the women’s side, sophomore Keishorea Armstrong was second in the 60 (7.62) and fifth in the 200 (24.50). She met the ECAC qualifying standard in both events.
Freshman Malaika Palacios, meanwhile, was fifth in the long jump. Her distance of 18-1 broke the Binghamton program’s freshman record of 18-0 ¼, which was set by Dayna Johnson back in 2005.
Senior Alexis Hatcher was 10th overall in the mile, but her time of 5:00.37 broke the school record of 5:03.42, which was set by Shannon Finnegan back in 2008.
Binghamton heads to the Ithaca Bomber Invitational on Feb. 14.
