Golf team wins Colgate Invitational
September 10, 2013
The Binghamton golf team picked up their first tournament victory of the early fall season, winning the Colgate Invitational on Sept. 8 at Seven Oaks GC in Hamilton. With a final round team score of 296 (+8), the Bearcats cleared reigning champions Youngstown State by eight strokes overall. Senior Bryce Edmister recorded his third career runner-up finish with a final round score of 73 (+1). He carried a 54-hole total of 217 (+1), just two strokes shy of individual medalist Jared Mactas of Lafayette.
Beginning the day, Binghamton sat just three strokes back of first-day leaders Youngstown State. Battling through wet and breezy conditions, the Bearcats kept calm and bested the Penguins by 11 strokes during final-round action. Josh Holling guided the way, scoring a team-low 72 (E) on Sunday. Both Holling and freshman Kyle Wambold ended the tournament tied for fourth place individually with a score of +2 overall.
鈥淚鈥檓 really proud of the performance this weekend,鈥 head coach Bernie Herceg said. 鈥淭hey held it together and really stayed focused down the stretch despite some tough conditions out there today. The second round, shooting a program record 281 (-7), really gave us a boost we needed and also the confidence to know we could pull this win out. Our goal this year was to give ourselves a chance heading into each final round and try to capitalize when it mattered most. The guys stepped up when they needed to and truly earned this one.鈥
With two holes remaining, Edmister birdied both 17 and 18 to shoot 73 and finish tied for second on Sunday. Through the season鈥檚 first two tournaments, his scoring average is a minuscule 71.2, firing four of his six rounds at under par. This second place finish marks the 12th time in his career that he has registered a top-10 finish.
Like Edmister, newcomer Kyle Wambold has authored a pair of top-10 finishes to start the 2013 campaign. Wambold carded rounds of 74-70-74 over the weekend, tying with teammate Holling and Harley Abrams of Lehigh in fourth position.
Jack Sedgewick鈥檚 77 on Sept. 8 was the fourth and final card to count toward the team鈥檚 final tally of 880 (+16). Sedgewick moved up 11 spots on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 33rd. Stephen Mincone, who entered the day in 20th place, fell back to 44th at tournament鈥檚 end.
Binghamton has won the Colgate Invitational five times, most recently having won in 2008. The win marks the 35th tournament won at the Division I level and the 13th team title for head coach Bernie Herceg since he took over the program in 2008.
The Bearcats will try to continue their winning ways in two weeks when they take aim at the Cornell Invitational, an event they have won four consecutive years. The tournament takes place Sept. 21-22 at Robert Trent Jones GC in Ithaca.
