Men’s soccer defeats nationally ranked Lafayette
September 21, 2010
Senior Kyle Manscuk scored just 1:14 into the game and redshirt freshman Chris Hayen recorded his first career shutout, leading Binghamton to a 1-0 win over No. 26 Lafayette in the opening round of the Colgate Red Raider Men’s Soccer Classic on Sept. 17.
The victory is the Bearcats’ highest win over a ranked opponent since they beat then-No. 21 Wisconsin, 1-0, on Sept. 14, 2008.
Manscuk finished a corner kick by sophomore forward Adam Whitehead, giving Binghamton the only goal it would need. It marked the fastest goal in the program’s Division I history, eclipsing the 1:22 it took Graham Munro to score against Vermont on Sept. 23, 2005.
“I thought our guys were very good tonight,” head coach Paul Marco said. “Chris and our back four defenders were excellent. Chris did a good job of organizing the defense and was able to catch some dangerous crosses. We set the tempo early in the game and took care of business against a good Lafayette team.”
In his third straight start against a nationally-ranked opponent, Hayen made three saves to record the solo shutout.
The Bearcats finished the Colgate Classic by tying the host school, 1-1. Manscuk scored for the third game in a row and was named MVP of the classic.
