Softball extends winnings streak to seven games

Sophomore shortstop Caytlin Friis drilled a three-run home run for the second consecutive game, powering Binghamton (18-11, 8-1 AE) to an 8-0, six-inning victory over Maine (6-32, 2-7 AE) in an America East softball game on April 14 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats sweep the three-game conference series and have now won seven straight games.
Friis was one of three Binghamton players to record a multiple-RBI game against the Black Bears. Freshman designated hitter Tiffany McIntosh and freshman first baseman Lisa Cadogan each drove in a pair of runs. Cadogan, freshman catcher Taylor Chaffee and junior outfielder Colleen Dougherty each finished with two hits.
Friis ignited a seven-run bottom of the second inning with her three-run blast. She was followed by McIntosh, who belted a two-run double. One batter later, McIntosh scored on a double by Cadogan. Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips capped the scoring with a RBI single.
The Bearcats had a chance to finish off the game in the bottom of the fifth inning but left the winning run on second base. One inning later, Cadogan iced the game on a RBI single.
Junior pitcher Demi Laney pitched the first four inning to improve her record to 7-5 on the second. Senior pitcher Kate Price tossed the final two frames.
Freshman outfielder Sydney Harbaugh, who scored on Cadogan鈥檚 game-winning hit, stole her 17th base of the season. That sets the Binghamton program鈥檚 single-season mark during its 13-year Division I era. Harbaugh had been tied with Sandy Meadows, who stole 16 bases during the 2008 campaign. The program鈥檚 all-time record of 23 stolen bases was set by Michelle Thorton in 1995.
Binghamton finished the weekend with a .378 team batting average against Maine. Chaffee hit a team best .714 (5-for-7) and drew three walks. Junior second baseman Jessica Bump, who drew a pair of walks on Sunday, finished 5-for-8 for the series.
Defensively, the Bearcats held Maine to a .175 batting average during the weekend and did not commit an error. The Black Bears were held scoreless in the final 16 innings of the series.
Binghamton now has seven shutouts this season, including the past two games. The last time the Bearcats recorded back-to-back shutouts was against Boston College (2-0) and Delaware (8-0) on Feb. 17, 2012.
