Binghamton (4-4) used a late third quarter 3-0 run to propel themselves to an 11-9 non-conference victory over visiting Quinnipiac on March 23 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Three players tallied two or more goals on the day for Binghamton, led by junior Matt Springer’s three scores in a game that featured three ties and three lead changes.

Down 7-6 with a shade over 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Binghamton’s offense stepped up. After some good ball movement, junior Kelly Donigan received a pass from freshman Johnny Maher about 15 yards out. Donigan took a step to his left and lined a shot into the back of the net, tying the score up at 7. Minutes later, Binghamton’s defense generated a score. Off the caused turnover from Garrett Augustyn, senior midfielder Shane Warner scooped up the ground ball and headed toward Quinnipiac’s defensive third. Warner beat a few defenders and found a wide-open Springer, who scored a quick stick goal at the 8:39 mark in the third. Nearing the end of the quarter, Donigan once again struck for the Bearcats on an unassisted goal that put the home squad ahead two at 9-7.

After both teams traded a pair of scores in the fourth, Quinnipiac crept closer. Senior Basil Kostaras netted a quick goal off the feed from Tom Gilligan to pull the Bobcats to within one with just under five minutes left. With tensions building, Binghamton locked away the victory on the goal from sophomore J.T. Hauck. Sophomore Tucker Nelson found a cutting Hauck, who beat the Bobcats goalie Gill Conners high for his fourth score of the season.

Joining Springer and Donigan with a multi-goal effort was sophomore Brandon Planck, who finished with two goals on the afternoon. Nelson was sensational feeding his teammates once again on Saturday, dishing out a team-high three assists. He also tallied a goal on a man-up opportunity.

Junior Max Schefler made a host of fantastic stops against Quinnipiac; wrapping up the game with 13 saves.

The Bearcats scored the fastest goal in their program history with a Springer tally just six seconds into the game. Two minutes after Springer’s goal, Planck put Binghamton ahead 2-0. Off a hand-off exchange from Nelson, Planck ducked his way into the front of the cage and snuck a shot past Conners. After a Quinnipiac score, Alex Doerflein won the ensuing faceoff and muscled his way to secure the ground ball. After a quick dodge down the left side of the field, Doerflein fired a low and quick shot that caught Connors off balance and found its way into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. Now with the score 3-2, Planck ended the quarter with an exclamation point. Off the quick restart, he dodged to his left, found and opening and sent a lefty wrist shot into the net; his second score of the quarter.

The Bobcats bounced back in the second, scoring the quarter’s first two goals. Leading scorer Michael Sagl found the back of the net first, his only score of the day. Long stick defender Carmen French also scored after he completed a clear as the visitors tied the game at 4. Nelson ended the half with his man-up score as Binghamton held a 5-4 lead at break.
