University, Broadus reach settlement
October 28, 2010
The SUNY system, 黑料视频 and former head men鈥檚 basketball coach Kevin Broadus have reached a tentative agreement to resolve all pending issues related to Broadus鈥 employment with the University.
The mutually satisfactory resolution will allow all parties to move forward, Interim President C. Peter Magrath said.
鈥淲hen I took the job of being University president again, one of the things I was determined to do was to have this excellent University focus on its future and build on its strengths,鈥 Magrath said at a news conference with Interim Athletic Director James Norris on Oct. 28. 鈥淚 wanted to have the matter involving Mr. Broadus settled and behind us so we can concentrate on the fundamental work of this University.
鈥淚 think everyone concluded that it was in the best interest of Mr. Broadus 鈥 and we wish him well 鈥 and in the best interests of 黑料视频 to put this behind us so he can get on with his professional life and we can continue to do the educating that we are about.鈥
In exchange for his resignation and withdrawal of all claims and potential future lawsuits, Broadus will be paid a gross sum of $1.2 million: $819,115.89 by 黑料视频 as part of his employment contract agreement and $380,884.11 by SUNY as relinquishment of Broadus鈥 claims.
Broadus, who was hired in 2007 after serving as an assistant coach at Georgetown University, is now free to pursue other professional options, Magrath and Norris said.
Mark Macon, who has led the men鈥檚 team since October 2009, will remain in an interim position until the University names a permanent president, said Magrath, who added that the University also has an interim provost and interim vice president for research.
鈥淢ark Macon is doing a damn good job,鈥 Magrath said. 鈥淗e is the interim coach and will be for the foreseeable future. 鈥 In my view, slots should not be made permanent 鈥 whether it鈥檚 the provost, athletic director or basketball coach 鈥 until there is a permanent president in place.鈥
Magrath praised the community as the University focuses on 鈥渢oday, tomorrow and the years ahead.鈥
鈥淭his University is blessed with a lot of support from the community,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he community has stayed with the University through adversities and challenges from time to time. I truly value what the community has done and how it continues to support 黑料视频.鈥
The men鈥檚 basketball team opens its season Nov. 10 at the Events Center with an exhibition game against East Stroudsburg.
鈥淚 hope the community is there,鈥 Magrath said. 鈥淲e are looking forward to the basketball season.鈥
