Volleyball drops three at Toldeo tournament
August 31, 2010
The Binghamton volleyball team lost three games at the Rocket Volleyball Classic in Toledo, Ohio, on Aug. 27-28. The Bearcats lost to Michigan, 3-0 (22-25, 16-25, 21-25), Toledo 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 14-25) before falling by the same score to Loyola (Md.) (24-26, 25-27, 17-25).
“We didn’t distribute or pass the ball well, which hinders our hitters and the offense,” head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. “We will take some learning opportunities from the tournament and work to get better as the season progresses.”
On Aug. 28, the Bearcats were beaten by tournament-host Toledo. Junior setter Kassie Kadera led the way for the Rockets with 31 assists and nine digs.
Senior hitter Michelle McDonough finished the match with nine kills and six digs, while junior setter Julie Chambers handed out 22 assists for the second straight match.
The match against Loyola was highly contested. The first set saw 12 ties and no lead bigger than three. BU evened the back and forth set at 24 with a kill by senior middle hitter Mercedes Montford. The Bearcats then gave up two straight points to let the frame slip away.
The second set was as hard fought as the first with the Greyhounds edging out BU. After Loyola gained its largest lead of the set, 19-12, the Bearcats fought back to tie the match at 24 on senior hitter Sandra DeVito’s kill. Anna Lejina gave BU the 25-24 advantage with her serving ace, but the Greyhounds went on to score three consecutive points to take a two sets to none lead.
In the third and final set of the match, the Greyhounds jumped out to a 14-8 lead before BU strung together three straight kills, cutting the lead to 15-12. Attacking errors by the Bearcats helped Loyola extend their lead to 20-13. The Greyhounds never looked back.
Lejina and McDonough posted double-doubles for the Bearcats with 14 kills, 16 digs and 11 kills, 13 digs, respectively.
Chambers had her best performance of the tournament at the setter position, dishing out 37 assists.
McDonough was named to the all-tournament team.
The Bearcats return to action on Sept. 3 against Jacksonville at the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Conn.
