Tom Head, emeritus professor of mathematical sciences, presented the paper “Using light to implement parallel Boolean algebra,鈥 at the 14th international conference Developments in Language Theory 2010 held Aug. 17-20 at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario. The paper appears in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science vol. 6224 (2010).

Otto Ulc, emeritus professor of political science, was honored at a PEN Club-sponsored event in Prague in June for his 80th birthday and the publication of his 29th book. He also received a silver medal from the president of the Czech Republic Senate for his various accomplishments. A similar honor was bestowed on him by the Lord Mayor of Pilsen, his native city. Ulc also delivered several lectures, two at the American Center/U.S. Embassy, followed by several radio interviews and two days of filming by Czech State Television.

M. Stanley Whittingham, professor and director of materials science and engineering, has been awarded the 2010 Northeast Region, American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for Achievements in the Chemical Sciences. Whittingham holds 16 patents, has authored more than 200 scholarly publications and has been invited to speak around the globe with more than 250 invited presentations. He has been a pioneer in the development of lithium-ion batteries and an inspiration to the next general of chemists. The Northeast Region established this award in 2008 to recognize notably outstanding achievements by a chemist in the Northeast Region. The award is conferred annually on a scientist who has made meritorious research contributions leading to the advancement of pure or applied chemistry.

Shana Teig Kantor, executive director of Hillel Binghamton, received Hillel鈥檚 Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence Award for her outstanding commitment to fulfilling Hillel鈥檚 mission of service to Jewish students around the globe. The award was given at Hillel Institute, a conference of Hillel professionals held at Washington University in St. Louis on Aug. 10-13. In making his presentation to Kantor, Hillel President Wayne L. Firestone noted that she is 鈥渁n experienced Hillel professional; bringing a strategic approach to Hillel鈥檚 work, and figuring out how to engage more students with fewer resources. Her vision has led to an explosion of participation in the Hillel鈥檚 Freshman Orientation, expanding the impact Hillel has on students from the moment they step on campus. Shana has demonstrated how to balance the demands of a growing family and an expanding campus program.鈥

Bruce Murray, professor of mechanical engineering, received a J. Tinsley Oden Faculty Research Fellowship to collaborate on research at the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. The program brings in outstanding researchers and scholars to collaborate with ICES faculty and students on advanced research in computational and applied mathematics.
