The Susquehanna Group of the Sierra Club honored Augie Mueller with the Lynda Spickard Environmental Award on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Mueller, professor emeritus of biology at ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ, has been a strong advocate for bicycling in the area for more than 40 years. He has led the bicycling community in numerous capacities: promoting more bicycling lanes and bicycle safety and providing reconditioned bicycles to youth.

Rachel Coker, director of research advancement, submitted a winning proposal to the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s District II Venture Capital Fund. The grant of up to $2,500 will support an ongoing partnership of ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ, Cornell University and the University of the Free State in South Africa. The Venture Capital Fund supports multi-institutional professional development initiatives. Coker’s grant was awarded in the December 2013 round of funding.

ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ and campus dining services provider Sodexo have announced that the University has become the first SUNY campus to attain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody certification. The certification ensures that in every step of the supply chain, from the fishers through the processor, distributor and the end user, MSC-certified seafood is not mixed with or substituted for non-certified seafood. A distinctive blue MSC ecolabel is displayed on the product, confirming that the seafood comes from a sustainable fishery that has been awarded MSC certification. The certification process entailed an inspection conducted by a third-party auditor as well as training of front-line staff.

Discover-e, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ’s research newsletter and website, received two prizes in the annual Council for Advancement and Support of Education Accolades Awards competition. The publication received a Silver Award in the News Website category and a Bronze Award in the Electronic Newsletter category. Rachel Coker, director of research advancement, edits Discover-e, with design by Martha Terry, creative services manager, and technical support from Oren Levi, information services manager. The awards will be presented in February during the CASE District II annual conference in Baltimore. The website .

ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ’s Physical Facilities Department donated $3,700 and dozens of toys to the Toys for Tots campaign in December.

“It makes us feel good, that we’re doing something to help out,” said Sherri Hall, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ library clerk. “And we try to do as much as we can.”

The money was raised in the annual John Mangino Memorial Golf Tournament.
