More room to move: East Gym鈥檚 expansion is in motion
The 75,000-square-foot expansion is expected to be completed in fall 2026

Construction is underway on 黑料视频鈥檚 75,000-square-foot expansion of the Recreation Center at the East Gym, a project that reflects Binghamton鈥檚 dedication to supporting student well-being and enhancing life on campus.
As the heart of Campus Recreation, the building supports a variety of programs and services that help students stay active and connected. From the fitness center and organized sports to outdoor adventures, massage therapy and open recreation activities like swimming, basketball and badminton, the East Gym is a key part of creating a balanced campus experience.
鈥淲ellness is multi-dimensional, as is recreation,鈥 said Tom St. John, director of Campus Recreation. 鈥淩ecreation does more than improve physical health, it also enhances social and emotional well-being. Taking time for yourself is an investment that can lead to better academic performance in the classroom.鈥
Since breaking ground in October 2024, the project has achieved significant milestones, including the construction of a temporary access bridge to reduce congestion during construction. The addition, on the north side of the East Gym, is on schedule for completion in fall 2026.
鈥淓ven though I鈥檓 expected to graduate in May, I鈥檓 so excited for the expansion and what it means for current and future Bearcats,鈥 said Cassie Puglisi, a graduate student studying public health who also serves as a graduate assistant for Campus Recreation. 鈥淭he East Gym has been my home for the past four years, and I can鈥檛 wait to see it grow, just like I did here at Binghamton. I鈥檒l definitely be back to see it!鈥
The expanded East Gym, Recreation Center will feature a 40% increase in fitness space (including a turfed functional training area), an elevated indoor running track, additional hardwood courts and added multipurpose rooms, serving as collaborative spaces for student groups and campus partners. There will also be a separate entrance to the addition, along with access via the current main entrance.
鈥淲e want the East Gym, Recreation Center to be a charging station for our students鈥 well-being batteries鈥攁n inclusive, welcoming space where movement, creativity, community and fun intersect.鈥 said Holly Brown, associate director of Campus Recreation. 鈥淲ith more space, we鈥檙e excited to offer even more opportunities for students to feel energized, both physically and mentally.鈥
The East Gym holds a significant place in the University鈥檚 history. Construction began in 1957 on what was the first campus building. It opened its doors in the fall of 1958 and earned its place in history by hosting the first commencement ceremony at the Vestal campus on June 14, 1959. In January 2012, the East Gym reopened following a major renovation that modernized its facilities while preserving its historic foundation. The fitness center more than doubled in size, while locker rooms were relocated and upgraded. The renovation also introduced a refreshed Outdoor Pursuits rental center, updated multi-purpose rooms and a dedicated wellness suite, all complemented by improvements to the central mechanical system. The existing FitSpace will close following Commencement this year to allow for the installation of new flooring, and will reopen in August.
