ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ's Division of Speech and Language Pathology offers the SPEAK OUT!® Parkinson Voice Project speech therapy program as part of the University's Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic.
Therapy information
90% of people with Parkinson’s disease are at risk for voice and swallowing disorders. SPEAK OUT!, developed by the , emphasizes speaking with intent to convert speech from an automatic function to an intentional act. Participation in SPEAK OUT!, daily home practice and regular re-evaluations have been shown to help patients regain and retain their speech and communication while minimizing swallowing issues.
Sessions
- Individual sessions are held twice a week for 8-10 weeks (more/less as needed on a case-by-case basis); sessions last approximately 45 minutes
- After individual sessions conclude, patients participate in a weekly group session aimed at helping them maintain their abilities; periodic refreshers will be conducted every 3–6 months to further assess the patient for continued maintenance
- All services are by appointment only

Jessica Underwood, MA, CCC-SLP, is a clinical instructor in the Division of Speech and Language Pathology at ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ's Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, where she teaches and supervises graduate and undergraduate SLP students. Underwood’s areas of expertise are adult communication, cognition and swallowing disorders. She is a licensed SPEAK OUT! provider. |
