Raymond G. Romanczyk, distinguished service professor of psychology, received the prestigious John W. Jacobson Award for lasting and continuing contributions to the field by the NYS Association for Behavior Analysis on Nov. 11, at the Association’s 21st annual conference in Saratoga Springs.

Gerard Johansen of the University Counseling Center and Mark Celio, doctoral student in clinical psychology, presented a workshop Oct. 18 at the U.S. Department of Education 2010 National Meeting on Alcohol and Other Drug and Violence Prevention in Higher Education. The workshop, titled 鈥 Developing and Conducting Alcohol Field Research in a Northeast College Tavern District: the Challenges, Surprises, and Discoveries,鈥 is based on a continuing research developed and implemented by the 黑料视频 Collaborative Ethanol Group, with fellow researchers Distinguished Teaching Professor of Psychology Steven Lisman, Distinguished Professor of Psychology Linda P. Spear and doctoral student in behavioral neuroscience, Courtney O鈥橦agen. The workshop provided an overview of developing alcohol field research in a college tavern district during the times that young adults will normally socialize. Conference participants were invited to consult with the 黑料视频 researchers during the development and implementation of similar studies when they returned to their campus communities.

Among the newly printed books presented at the Sept. 18 “Freundestreffen” gathering and book-launching celebration in Weimar, Germany, for the 85th birthday of Professor Katharina Mommsen were two volumes of a trilingual poetry series, illustrated and with trilingual CDs, called “Voices of the World in Song/Stimmen der Voelker in Liedern,” which Martin Bidney, professor emeritus of English and comparative literature, edits with Mommsen. Volume 1, Adam Mickiewicz, Sonety Krymskie/Crimean Sonnets/Krim-Sonette, contains Bidney’s English translations of the 18 sonnets from the Polish; he also reads these aloud on the accompanying CD. Volume 3, Andre’ Bjerke, Pa jorden et sted/Somewhere on Earth/Irgendwo auf Erden, contains Bidney’s English translations of the 37 Norwegian poems (from Alexander Schlayer’s German); he also reads these aloud on the accompanying CD. Volume 2, a collection of 39 Pushkin poems with Bidney’s translations from the Russian, likewise read aloud on trilingual CD, is forthcoming. All three books are being published in Bonn by Bernstein-Verlag, and more are planned.

The School of Management has selected the recipients of its 2009-10 Excellence Awards. Danielle Dunne and Qi Wang will receive the Corning Award for Excellence in Research, and Debi Mishra will receive the school鈥檚 award for Excellence in Teaching. Dunne is an assistant professor of strategy, with research interests in strategic management, innovation and technology management, strategic alliances particularly in science-based industries and organizational learning and innovation. Wang, assistant professor of marketing, focuses on competitive marketing strategy in markets with standards competition and network effects, impacts of consumer product reviews and social networks, and impacts of marketing strategy on firm and product survival. In 2005, Mishra, associate professor of marketing, received the Chancellor鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Teaching - the highest recognition of teaching prowess conferred by the State University of New York. Martin Bidney, professor emeritus of English and Comparative Literature, has published an article, “Bright Blur, Blinding Light, Blank Page: The Epistemically Skeptical Epiphanies of Chekhov,” in Slavic and East European Journal 54.2 (Summer 2010), 272-296. He has also published a cycle of original poems, “Friendship’s Tribute; or, The Briefer Divan: Forty Lyrics for Katharina Mommsen,” in Liber Amicorum Katharina Mommsen: zum 85. Geburtstag (Bonn: Bernstein-Verlag, 2010) 31-77. On Sept. 17, the day prior to the book-launching party for this and other volumes, he played violin in Konzert der Freu(n)de in the Richard-Wagner-Saal of the Hotel Elephant in Weimar, Germany. With Dietrich Brandt, cellist of the State Opera, and Marcos Kopf, Argentinian concert pianist, Bidney performed in three trio movements by Mendelsssohn, Schubert and Haydn.
