At ASERL, our research is driven by a commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions through materials innovation, advanced manufacturing, and circular economy strategies. We explore the fundamental properties of energy materials across multiple length scales and apply cutting-edge technologies to create practical, scalable solutions for energy storage and recycling.

Our research focuses on three key areas:

  1. Developing New Sustainable Energy Storage Materials
    We design and synthesize novel energy storage materials with a focus on sustainability, low cost, and high performance. Our research spans from molecular-scale material engineering to nanometer- and micrometer-scale particle assemblies. We investigate material structures, compositions, and interfaces to enhance the efficiency, capacity, and longevity of batteries.
  2. Developing Advanced Sustainable Battery Manufacturing Processes
    We are pioneering eco-friendly and scalable manufacturing techniques for battery electrodes and cells. Our work includes developing low-waste electrode fabrication methods, optimizing microstructures for thick battery electrodes, and integrating sustainable materials into manufacturing workflows. We also explore advanced manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing and flow-assisted assembly.
  3. Developing Battery Recycling Technologies
    We research and develop efficient, low-energy battery recycling technologies to support a circular economy. Our work includes exploring hydrometallurgical and direct recycling techniques to recover valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. We also investigate innovative processes for reusing and reconditioning battery materials for new energy storage applications.
