On Monday, Dec. 30, the Southern Tier Crime Analysis Center notified the University Police about a series of burglaries at various residences in the City of Binghamton, many of which are leased by students. Since Dec. 25, at least eleven burglaries affecting students have been reported to the Binghamton Police Department.
The incidents differ significantly in terms of methods of entry, types of items stolen and the extent of property damage. Currently, no clear pattern or common denominator has been identified. The Binghamton Police Department is actively investigating these incidents, but no suspects have been apprehended at this time.
University Police urge anyone with information about these incidents to contact the Binghamton Police Department at (607) 778-1911. The University Police are assisting with the investigation wherever possible and can be reached at (607) 777-2393.
To reduce the risk of similar crimes:
- Ensure all windows, doors, and other entry points are securely locked whenever the residence is unoccupied.
- Take valuable items such as cash, jewelry, gaming consoles and laptops with you if you plan to be away for an extended period.
- If your residence will be unoccupied for an extended time, inform your landlord or
property manager in advance.
