Rape Aggression Defense program

BE AWARE
One in six women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
80 percent of those sexually assaulted are under age 30.
Girls and women ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.

WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS

Researchers have generally agreed that female victims’ resistance can be effective in avoiding rape completion. Self-protection actions – both forceful and non-forceful — significantly reduce the risk of rape completion. Specifically, such actions as attacking without weapons, struggling, running away/hiding and warning appeared to reduce the risk of rape by more than 80 percent compared to non-resistance.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

The University Police Department at ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ offers Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) courses. The RAD system is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. It’s a comprehensive program that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. All instructors are RAD-certified. Participants receive a workbook/reference manual that outlines the entire physical defense program for reference and continuous personal growth.

The continued, growing and wide-spread acceptance of the RAD system is due in part to the easy-to-learn and effective tactics, solid research, legal defensibility and unique teaching methodology. The RAD system of realistic and proven self-defense tactics is dedicated to teaching women defensive concepts and techniques to use against various types of assault and gives them the knowledge needed to make an educated decision about resistance and defense.
