Accessible Course Material

Instructors are responsible for taking steps to insure all course materials are accessible.

Brightspace material (e.g., Word documents, PDFs, Scanned documents)

Send any course material to Course Reserves and they will convert it to an accessible document on your behalf.

Textbooks

To enable accessible material requests in a timely manner, SSD asks that you submit textbook requisitions as early as possible. It takes several weeks to obtain and convert textbooks into an accessible format.

Captioning

SSD will notify you via email when a registered student will be requiring captioning.  SSD will caption your content.  When the student is in your class all videos, movies, and/or films required for your course you MUST show the captioned version. Please provide links or copies of videos to SSD well in advance so that we have sufficient time to caption.

Training using Panopto or Camtasia is offered by the University Center for Training and Development.

Note: YouTube auto-generated captions can be inaccurate and unintelligible. The links must be sent to our office to ensure accessibility.

Accessible Exams

Students authorized for assistive technology for exams requires that the document be made accessible. Please contact SSD for further instructions.

Sensus Access

This tool allows for faculty and staff to make various types of documents accessible.

Documents and Powerpoints

Math Formulas

  • For web pages, use an equation editor that outputs MathML. For MS Word and PPT documents, use the MathType plugin.
  • Keep the original LaTeX source files. This offers flexibility in converting to accessible formats.

Directions for Editing Test Options in Brightspace

  • If the View Other Users' Accommodations and the Add/Edit Accommodations permissions are turned on for your role, you can grant learners quiz accommodations from the Claslist tool. Once granted, these accommodations apply to all quiz activities in a course for that learner.

To grant quiz accommodations from the Classlist:

    1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, within your course, navigate to your Classlist.
    2. Click on the context menu of the learner to whom you want to grant a quiz accommodation, and then click Edit Accommodations.
    3. To grant a learner additional time on a quiz, under Quizzes Timing, select the Modify Time Limit check box and then grant the time either in terms of quiz time multipliers or minutes:
      • To grant the additional time in terms of quiz time multipliers, select the Multiplier of original quiz time radio button and specify the number of times. For example, 1.5 times more than the original time on the quiz.
      • To grant the additional time in terms of minutes, select the Extra time radio button and specify the number of extra minutes.
    4. To enable learners to right-click while taking a quiz, under Controls, select the Always Allow Right Click check box.
    5. Click Save.
