Educational Studies (MS)

Overview

*We are not accepting applications for this program at this time.

The MS in educational studies program with a concentration in community schools is designed for two groups of graduate students:

  1. Those interested in a master's degree in education but not seeking teacher certification
  2. Teaching, social service, health, or other professionals who desire preparation in education and who wish to work in Community Schools (integrated systems of support) or with agencies associated with the Community Schools strategy

To meet the requirements of this program, students will identify their own professional goals in consultation with their advisor and register for courses that will support attaining those goals. Students completing this program of study may pursue careers in settings such as daycare centers, education-related social services, non-teaching positions in public and private schools, informal learning environments (e.g., after-school, summer programs) or education/training in business and industry environments.

What are Community Schools?

Community Schools build bridges between community resources, placing the school at the core of the community, to support youth, families and neighborhoods within and beyond the doors of the classroom. Through integrating community resources, community schools combat intergenerational poverty and create a more equitable school environment leading to increased student success and stronger communities.

Required courses

Students in the MS in Educational Studies with a concentration in community schools program are required to:

  • take six credits in foundations of education, six credits in teaching and learning, and three credits in research;

Students with initial certification (e.g. music, art, health, etc.) will be required to take 12 of their 15 credits of electives in the content area of their initial certification, usually through another department at 黑料视频. At least 15 credits of the program will have a community schools focus.

Culminating paper/project requirement

A culminating capstone paper/project is typically completed in the final semester of study. Some examples of capstone papers/projects include: a formal research paper on a major educational issue, a research report of a field-based study, or a reflective portfolio of teaching and curricular materials.
