Graduate assistants

Become a graduate assistant for Campus Recreation. We have positions for students interested in marketing, Intramural Sports, Fitness and Wellness, Club Sports or operations. Campus Recreation employs four GA positions during the academic year.

Internships

Group fitness

The group fitness internship is a 90-hour, two-credit* internship offered to undergraduate and graduate students (non-required OUT credits) who are available for employment with Campus Recreational Services the following semester. The purpose of this internship is to prepare students to pass the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Certification Exam (a requirement to be a group fitness instructor) as well as learn the practical skills needed to instruct a variety of group fitness classes. 

*To successfully complete this course and achieve a passing grade, all students must participate fully and complete the requirements of their Learning Agreement. This learning experience is identical for all students, however due to differences among the colleges and schools at ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ and how they award credit towards degree completion, the number of credits that may count towards your degree vary. Please check with your college advising office for a detailed explanation on how credits earned in this OUT course may apply towards your degree requirements.

Personal training

The personal training internship is a 90-hour, two-credit* internship offered to undergraduate and graduate students (non-required OUT credits) who are available for employment with Campus Recreational Services the following semester. The purpose of this internship is to prepare students to pass the ACE Personal Trainer Certification Exam (a requirement to be a personal trainer) as well as learn the practical skills needed to effectively work with a variety of individuals one-on-one and in a small group setting.

*To successfully complete this course and achieve a passing grade, all students must participate fully and complete the requirements of their Learning Agreement. This learning experience is identical for all students, however due to differences among the colleges and schools at ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ and how they award credit towards degree completion, the number of credits that may count towards your degree vary. Administrative and programming positions

  • Wellness Services attendant 

    Assist customers with check-in processes and paperwork for all services offered within the Wellness Services area. Staff will be responsible for providing information to students, faculty and staff who wish to use the facilities or register for a program/event; data entry; filing and assisting the department with administrative work as assigned. Must have a thorough knowledge (or be willing to learn) of all areas of Campus Recreation, particularly fitness/wellness. 

    Requirements: must be punctual, computer proficient and have excellent communication skills. Must have the ability to work at least 6 hours per week. 

  • Fitness assistant

    Determine the eligibility of patrons to access the fitness center and monitor and assist members in exercising. Educate patrons regarding policies, procedures and proper equipment usage, and provide general care and maintenance of equipment and facilities. Assistants are also expected to provide information regarding Campus Recreational Services facilities and programming. 

    Requirements: must have the ability to work at least 6 hours per week and have a personal commitment to wellness and fitness. 

  • Outdoor Pursuits Office and Rental Center assistant 

    Office duties include point of sale (POS) operation, cash handling and record transactions with accuracy; register participants, file, photocopy, answer phones and email with accuracy; represent and promote the program at campus functions, and enfore department policies and procedures. 

    Rental Center duties include: size and rent outdoor gear, assist with repair, cleaning, maintenance and inventory of the outdoor rental equipment. Other responsibilies include laundry, Nordic ski waxing, camp stove troubleshooting, simple bicycle maintenance, and vehicle maintenance on 15-passenger vans (i.e. checking tire pressure and fluid levels). Vans may require weeekly interior and exterior cleaning. 

    Requirements: must be a previous or current participant of Outdoor Pursuits. Familiarity with multiple outdoor activities is preferred. Must be punctual, computer proficient, reliable and have exellent communication and organizational skills. Attention to detail is a must. Some mechanical aptitude, physical dexterity and the ability to work Mondays and Fridays preferred. Must complete the PCI Compliance exam once a year. 

  • Recreational services assistant

    Determine the eligibility of all invidiuals entering the Rec Center. Assist customers with purchases and registrations for all services, answer questions pertaining to Campus Recreational Services programs; enforce department policies and procedures; data entry, filing; point of sale (POS) operations and cash handling; and assist the department with mailings and adminsitrative work as assigned. Will also be responsible for recreation equipment check-outs to patrons. 

    Must have (or be willing to learn) a thorough knowledge in all areas of Campus Recreation programming (intramurals, open recreation, club sports, fitnes/wellness and outdoor pursuits) to provide information to students, faculty, and staff who wish to use the facilities or register for a program/event. 

    Requirements: must be punctual, computer proficient, and have excellent communication and organizational skills, and attention to detail. Experience in cash handling and customer service is beneficial. Must have the ability to work at least 6 hours per week. Must complete the PCI Compliance exam once a year. 

  • Graphic design assistant

    This position plays a key role in developing and implementing creative projects that promote the programs and services offered by Campus Recreation. General duties include designing marketing materials for print, digital and web using Adobe Creative Suite as assigned. This may include signage, web banners, brochures, wall decals, flyers and advertisements. This position will assist the professional staff with ensuring a consistent brand across all facets of Campus Recreation. 

    Requirements: Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, solid understanding of graphic design principles, positive attitude, strong attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and passionate about design. 

  • Lifeguard 

    Work for all recreational swims, instructional classes and special events. Open and set up the pool area at the beginning of each scheduled swim, class or event, maintain a safe environment by enforcing all rules and regulations and maintain alertness at all times. At the end of each shift, fill out a daily summary form and secure the pool area. May be called upon to assist water safety instructors during scheduled classes. 

    Requirements: must be currently certified in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and have the ability to work at least 6 hours per week. A pre-interview skills exam will be administred to accepted candidates. 

  • Intramural Sports official/referee

    General duties include enforcing all rules and policies relating to a particular sport/activity as well as keeping score and time for evening and weekend activities. Training sessions will be provided. Assist with game management duties and responsibilities, work within various weather-related conditions, must be able to lift various amounts of weight with and/or without assistance and have appropriate fitness levels based on the specific sport. Positions available at various rates include area flag football, basketball (3v3, 5v5), coed dodgeball, flag football, soccer (outdoor and indoor), softball, volleyball. 

Instructional positions

  • Ropes course assistant

    Ropes course staff must be willing to develop a basic understanding of the benefits and objectives of teambuilding. Duties include guiding groups, introducing the rules, consequences and safety considerations for specific teambuilding activities. Must possess the physical ability, range of motion and manual dexterity to negotiate various types of outdoor terrain necessary to perform facilitator tasks including knot tying, belaying skills, hauling, rope handling and rigging set-up/take-downs on a high ropes course.

    The ability to climb to, traverse and descend from heights that may exceed 25 feet is required. Availability to complete or update American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certifications. Specific facilitator training is provided. A willingness and availability to assist with eight hours of low elements and 16 hours of high elements programming for the Challenge Program is highly desired.

  • Water safety instructor

    Teach swim lessons and individual aquatic fitness (minimum of two clients per semester). Required to teach ongoing weekly American Red Cross swim lessons to groups of adults or children. Individual aquatic fitness is one-on-one swimming evaluations and personal training sessions. Depending on the particular service requested, assist clients in reaching their specific swimming goals via consultation, exercise instruction, and development and implementation of individualized exercise programs. Ability to work with others is essential. Requirements: must be American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certified and have CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.

  • Group fitness instructors

    Prepare, lead, educate and encourage participants through safe and effective group fitness sessions. Each instructor is assigned to teach at least 2 classes a week in the specific area in which they are certified and have expertise. Requirements: national certification from organizations such as AFAA, ACE or Mad Dogg, proficiency in the instruction of at least one specific instructional area (i.e., Spinning, Zumba, Yoga etc.), and personal commitment to wellness and fitness.

Supervisory positions

Preference will be given to current Campus Rec employees with at least two semesters of service. Must be currently CPR/AED and First Aid certified or willing to certify.

  • Sport program supervisor

    General duties include: supervising and managing weekday, nightly and weekend intramural and club sport programs. Game management and supervision require supervisors to respond to emergencies, enforce policy, and effectively manage and/or collaborate with student staff, University participants (students, faculty, and staff), spectators, visiting club teams and club officials/referees. Supervisors must also assist in the training and evaluation of student officials. Previous supervisory experience or proven history of strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills preferred since the position oversees other student staff.

    The position also requires the employee to work in various weather-related conditions and be able to lift various amounts of weight with and/or without assistance.

    Requirements: the ability to work weekday afternoons, nights and weekends. Sport program supervisors must also be certified, or willing to become certified, in CPR/AED and first aid.

  • Head lifeguard

    Assist with the overall management and scheduling of the pool and its staff. Assist with the recruiting, hiring, training, monthly in-services, supervision, scheduling and evaluation of the student staff. Oversee the pool staff files and process biweekly student payroll. Assist with equipment maintenance and equipment inventory. Maintain daily, weekly and monthly records of patron participation for year-end reports. Previous supervisory experience or proven history of strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills preferred since the position oversees other student staff.

    Requirements: proficiency in all emergency procedures, as well as facility policies and procedures; must be currently certified in Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid.

  • Fitness manager

    Assist with the overall management and scheduling of the fitness center and its staff. Managers assist with the recruiting, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling and evaluation of the student staff. Oversee fitness center staff files along with processing biweekly student payroll. Determine when equipment maintenance is necessary as well as maintain equipment inventory. Maintain daily, weekly and monthly records of patron participation for year-end reports. Previous supervisory experience or proven history of strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills preferred since position oversees other student staff.

    Requirements: proficiency in all emergency procedures as well as facility policies and procedures; ability to work at least 10 hours per week, mainly late evenings and weekends.

  • Building manager

    Manage matters related to the operation of all activity areas in the Rec Center. Must have thorough knowledge in all areas of Campus Recreation programming (intramurals, open recreation, club sports, fitness/wellness, and outdoor pursuits) and CEO classes to provide information to students, faculty and staff who wish to use the Rec Center. Open and close facilities for recreational usage and special events; respond to injuries and emergencies, and enforce departmental and University policies to all patrons using the facilities. Previous supervisory experience or a proven history of strong leadership, communication and problem-solving skills preferred since this position oversees other student staff. Ability to work with others and be flexible is essential.

    Requirements: the ability to work at least 10 hours per week, including early mornings, late evenings and weekends. Must complete the PCI Compliance exam once a year.
