Internship Funding

Internships provide students with valuable hands-on job experience that can open doors for a future career. However, for students with financial need, accepting internship offers is not always feasible as many are unpaid or do not pay enough to cover cost of living. The Fleishman Career Center recognizes this issue and is committed to removing barriers to internship participation by providing internship funding.

Eligibility

In order to apply for internship funding, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be currently matriculated
  • Have a SSN (Social Security Number) or ITIN (Individual Tax Identification Number)
  • Have a FAFSA (Federal Student Aid) on file with the office of Financial Aid and Student Record that demonstrates financial need
  • Have already received an internship offer
  • Check each fund for additional requirements. Some funds have restrictions on majors, class years, and GPAs, but not all. Some funds require that the internship be unpaid, but not all.

Please note that this is a competitive application process and not all applicants will receive funding, even if they meet all eligibility criteria for that fund. Preference will be given to students who have not received funding before.

Application Process

Each fund is unique and has a different application process, so please check the applications of each individual fund for specific details. However, most require the following:

  • Resume
  • Personal statement that includes information about the internship and how it will enhance the student’s career development
  • Internship Expense Budget Worksheet
  • Some funds require additional materials. Check each fund for a specific list of what is required.

Applications typically open mid-March and close around June. Funds are distributed on a rolling basis and are likely to run out before applications close, so it is advised that students complete the application as early as possible. Funding is awarded based on both the quality of the application and the level of need of the student. It is strongly recommended that students have their resume and other application materials reviewed by a Fleishman Career Center staff member for feedback to ensure their application is high quality.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is considered an internship?

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), an experience can be defined as an internship if it meets all of the following criteria:

    • The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
    • The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
    • The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
    • There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
    • There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
    • There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
    • There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.
  • Can I use the funding for research or creative work?
These funding opportunities are not intended to support research and scholarly or creative work. For information on research resources, please visit the Undergraduate Research Center.
  • What other funding sources are there?

For other funding opportunities also check out: Funding Opportunities and Internal and External Awards.

Professional development experiences (such as conferences, trainings, grad school application fees, professional clothing, and more) are potentially eligible for reimbursement through the .

Students can also view our Financial Resources Guide for additional funding sources.

  • I fit all the criteria for the fund. Am I guaranteed funding?
The internship funds have finite funding, which means that we unfortunately cannot accept all applications. This is a competitive application and some applicants who fit all criteria will not be awarded funding. The Fleishman Career Center recognizes that this is difficult and continuously looks for additional sources of funding to be able to support as many students as possible.
  • What criteria does the selection committee look for?

The selection committee will select applicants based on the following criteria:

    • Quality of the application
    • Level of need of the applicant
    • Value of the internship experience

The committee will also prioritize applicants who have not received support through the internship funds before.

Note that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so those who submit an application earlier will have a better chance of receiving funding.

  • What can I do to increase my chances of my application being accepted?

We strongly recommend meeting with a Fleishman Career Center staff member to have your resume and cover letter reviewed before you submit. Staff can provide feedback on your materials to ensure you are submitting a high-quality application. Schedule an appointment through or visit UU-133 during walk-in hours.

  • Can I apply for multiple funds?

Yes! Students can apply for as many funds as they would like. Make careful note of the application requirements and ensure you are eligible before applying.

Please also note that students who are not selected for the fund they applied for will be automatically considered for any other funds they are eligible for. However, some funds may require additional/different documentation that would need to be submitted prior to receiving any awards. Please monitor your email closely for updates and be prepared to gather additional documentation if asked.

  • I can't see or find the application on the fund's webpage. Is it not working?

Only Binghamton students are allowed to apply for the funds. Because of this, you must sign into the virtual career center, uConnect, using your Binghamton credentials to view the application. If you cannot see an application, do the following:

    1. Click the "log in" button on the top right of the application page
    2. Sign in using your BU credentials
    3. Refresh the page

If the application still does not show up, contact us at intefund@binghamton.edu.

  • When will I hear back from the selection committee?

Applications are reviewed at the end of every month, and decisions are sent to all applicants during the beginning of the next month (example: all students who apply during March will hear back during the first week of April). This means it can take up to 4 weeks to hear back.
