University Police Officer John Nunez assisted the Broome County Sheriff鈥檚 Department Thursday, Aug. 16. Sheriff鈥檚 deputies had detained two Honduran suspects stopped for a vehicle violation. The men were unable to provide citizenship papers or green cards and spoke only Spanish. The Sheriff鈥檚 Department requested Nunez who served as a translator for the suspects. No charges were filed against the men, who were taken into custody by the United States Border Patrol.

The program BBC 3: Twenty Minutes, “Episode 1 of 2, Goethe and the West-Eastern Divan,” tha aired Saturday, July 21, 2012, included recitations of samples from poems #5, #26 and #128 of the translation of Goethe’s West-East Divan (Albany: SUNY Press, 2010) by Martin Bidney, professor emeritus of English and comparative literature.

Associate Professor of History Wendy Wall’s award-winning book, Inventing the 鈥淎merican Way鈥�: The Politics of Consensus from the New Deal to the Civil Rights Movement, was discussed in a recent cover story in New York Magazine by the noted columnist Frank Rich. Three 黑料视频 students 鈥� Anders Bjornberg, Christine Hubbard and Brian Zbriger 鈥� were selected to receive U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarships. The students will spend seven to 10 weeks in intensive language institutes this summer in countries where one of 13 languages deemed critical by the U.S. government are spoken. Bjornberg, a doctoral student in sociology from Ithaca, will focus on Bangla/Bengali in Bangladesh; Hubbard, a double major in biological sciences and an individualized major from New Milford, N.J., will focus on Russian in Russia; and Zbriger, a graduate student in sociology from Binghamton, will focus on Indonesian in Indonesia. The CLS Program provides fully-funded, group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship and apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers.

Jonathan Cohen, University photographer, received first prize in the photo-essay category of the University Photographers’ Association of America’s annual photos of the year competition for his photos of the flood evacuation at the Events Center in September 2011. The highly competitive contest receives entries from hundreds of university staff photographers across the country and is judged by the members of the organization during their annual symposium. Cohen also took home two honorable mentions for a portrait of alumna farmer Shannon Hayes, and the image of the lightning bolt over campus. See Cohen鈥檚 winning entries at .
