Julie McLaughlin, a spring 2012 graduate in human development and art from Syracuse, received an honorable mention in the Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition for her work Turner’s Boats (After Turner). The exhibition showcases work by the top student artists from across SUNY and is on display at the New York State Museum through Sept.3, 2012. The juried exhibition features 68 works selected from more than 316 artistic pieces submitted for the SUNY Student Art Exhibitions for fall 2011 and spring 2012, which were previously displayed at State University Plaza in Albany. The traditional areas of drawing, ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture are enhanced by the addition of digital imaging and mixed media installations. The awards were presented by SUNY Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost David K. Lavallee, at a reception at the Museum on June 5.

John J. Appelbaum, pre-law advisor, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Northeast Pre-Law Advisors Association (NAPLA) as a member-at-large. He will serve a two-year term.

Each year, the Department of Theatre recognizes students with outstanding academic standing who show exceptional skills in a specialized area in theater.

The following students received awards:

Jun Han, the Jack Berman Award; Josh Spodick, the Theatre Department Award; NJ Agwuna and Dustin Hirthler, the Don A. Watters Award; Rebecca Haisman, the Pappy Parker Players Award; and Barbara Erin Delo, Michael Gallagher, Edward Pottorff and Aaron Rubinstein, the Albert Nocciolino Excellence in Theatre Award.

The following students received scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year:

Andrew Gutierrez, Solomon Israel Theatre Arts Scholorship; Molly Powell, the Alexander Rae Bladwin Jr. Memorial Scholarship; Glenn Pepe, the John & Vi Bielenberg Theatre Scholarship; Andrew Bryce, Gruber Family Scholarship in Theatre; Jacob Wentlent, the Alfred Brooks Memorial Theatre Scholarship; and Emely Zepeda, Emily & Orville Nielsen, MD Theatre Scholarship.

The department also recognized Lars Updale, adjunct and electrics supervisor for the Theatre Department, for his years of service. 

Alexa Schmidt, registered dietician with Sodexo Campus Services, placed second in the Most Innovative Nutrition Program category in the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) annual Nutrition Awards Program for the 鈥淣ourish U with Alexa鈥� program. Nourish U with Alexa promotes the benefits of proper nutrition, wellness and living a healthy lifestyle to the campus community. The awards program aims to help member institutions advance their culinary expertise by acknowledging successful promotions and outstanding recipes. Contests are open to all NACUFS institutional members. The NACUFS membership consists of approximately 550 institutions of higher education from across the U.S. and Canada, and nearly 500 industry members from the food, equipment and consulting market segments.

Kudos and thanks for a job well done go to the Commencement Planning Committee and the many volunteers from campus and the community who pulled off another successful Commencement Weekend in May. With their hard work and time, dozens of doctoral candidates were hooded, hundreds of master鈥檚 candidates crossed the stage and nearly 2,400 undergraduates received their degrees in style.

Andy Morris, associate director of admissions, presented a pre-conference workshop titled, 鈥淩ecruiting Gleeks鈥� at the combined Potomac/Chesapeake Association of College Admissions Counselors (PCACAC) and the Southern Association of College Admissions Counselors (SACAC) annual conference Ap[ril 21024, in Arlington, Va. The presentation targeted both college admissions and high school counselors to discuss best practices for helping special student populations navigate the college search process. The student groups included Jewish, academically talented, LGBTQ, performing arts students and athletes.  The joint conference had more than 1,100 college and high school counselors in attendance.
